Charity Event – The Big Pull

1 September 2016

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) firefighters will be taking part in a charity event they have named ‘The Big Pull’ organised by Caversham Road Fire Station.

The event will last four days (1 – 4 September) during which time they will pull the Water Rescue Unit approximately 55 miles from our furthest West fire station, Lambourne to our furthest East fire station, Langley.  The planned route:

Day one – Lambourn to Newbury (14 miles)

Day two – Newbury to Reading (18 miles)

Day three – Reading to Maidenhead (14 miles)

Day four – Maidenhead to Langley (10 miles)

The crew will be stopping to raise awareness for water safety and collect donations in three major towns on the way; Newbury, Reading and Maidenhead. The event is hoping to  raise as much money as possible for three very deserving charities, the money raised will be equally split with 33.3% going to each charity. The three chosen charities are:

  • The Firefighters charity (#Firefighters999)
  • Cystic Fibrosis (#CysticFibrosis)
  • Brookfields Special Educational Needs (SEN) school in Tilehurst (#BrookfieldsSchool)

There will be many fire and rescue service personnel pulling during the four days but the main crew will be; Watch Manager Phil Clark, Watch Manager Rafer Joseph, Temporary Crew Manager Barry Whitting, Firefighter Dave Beards, Firefighter Kevin Cramner, Firefighter Simon Appleby, Firefighter Craig Rodgers and Firefighter Darren Hulbert. Along the route, crews will be joining in as well as off duty crew coming to join in and support! Many of the RBFRS personnel pulling are aged 40 or over which shows the fitness and stamina of our firefighters.

An approximate figure of £1,000 has been raised so far through the two Just Giving pages created for the events ( and and local fundraising creating awareness of the event. These pages will remain open until after the event. A raffle has also been organised alongside this event which will take place at the end of September; we are very grateful for all the local businesses who have donated prizes for this.

During the event, Caversham Road Fire Station (@CavershamRoadFS) will be live tweeting using the hashtag #TheBigPull
