Make An Escape Plan
Would you know what to do if your smoke alarm went off in the middle of the night? Would you and your family be able to escape?

It can be difficult to think clearly in an emergency. The situation can change in seconds. Thirty seconds after the smoke alarm goes off, an entire floor of your house could be filled with dense smoke. It may be dark as well, making it even harder to find a way out.

Even if you already know what to do, you need to talk about it to everyone who lives in or visits your home. We all hope it will never happen to us. But making an escape plan in advance and practising it regularly saves lives.

Make an escape plan together:
escape plan - make the plan 1. Make the plan
  • Include everyone who lives in your house, especially children, older people and lodgers.
  • Talk through your escape plan, including what to do and what not to do in a fire.
escape plan - choose an escape route 2. Choose an escape route
  • The best escape route is your normal way in and out of your house.
  • Choose a second route, just in case the first one is blocked.
  • Keep both routes clear of obstructions.
  • If there are older people or children in the house, plan the order you’d escape in, so that if you have to go out of a window you can help them down.
escape plan - think of a refuge 3. Think of a refuge
  • If you can’t escape, you will need to find a room to take refuge in.
  • This is particularly important if you have difficulty moving around or going downstairs on your own.
  • Try to find a room that has a window and a phone.
escape plan - know where the keys are 4. Make sure that everyone knows where you keep the keys
  • Always keep door and window keys in the same place.
  • Make sure everyone in your household knows where they are.
5. Make sure everyone knows what to do
  • Take a few minutes to “walk through” the plan with everyone in the household.
  • Regularly remind everyone about what to do in the event of a fire (see Quick Links - What to do in an Emergency).
  • Keep a copy of your address by the phone, so children can read it out to the emergency services.
  • Put a reminder of your escape plan somewhere prominent, like the door of the fridge.
