Wholetime Firefighter:
Conditions of Service
Overview
Members of the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service work a 42 hour week. Duties are divided into day and night shifts,
with an average of at least two days off a week. Paid leave when you join the service is 28 days a year in addition to
public holidays, but if you are required to work on these days you are paid in double time and given time off in lieu.
If you choose to retire with 25 years of service at the age of 50 or more you will receive a pension* of roughly the
rate of half pay; if you complete 30 years service the rate is two-thirds. Special pension provision is made for
retirement on ill-health or injury on duty and for dependants.
