Information From Fire Stations
01 WHO TO CONTACT
RBFRS encourages direct contact between the media and local fire stations, regarding this relationship as beneficial to all and positive in terms of getting information to the community.

You are welcome to build these links with your local fire station(s) but please remember that these are working fire stations so the duty crew may well not be available when you have a deadline to meet!

If you would like to contact a fire station please call a member of the Corporate Communications team.

02 WHEN TO CONTACT
We ask that calls to stations are made at a time pre-arranged with the person you need to speak to. This will usually be during time slots:

Mornings: between 08:15 and 08:45
Afternoons: between 17:15 and 17:45

03 DUTY SYSTEMS
Watches work the following 2:2:4 duty system:

Two days of 09:00 - 18:00
Two nights of 18:00 - 09:00

This means that if you want to speak to a firefighter whose Watch has just completed a tour of duty, they will not be available until they are back on duty four days later. We do not contact staff who are off-duty with regard to media requests.

Officers work different duty systems according to their role and specialist responsibilities. For example, a Fire Investigation Officer who has been dealing with an incident will not be available to speak to the media if he/she is subsequently off-duty. Training or operational requirements may also take them away from the Brigade.
04 SOURCING INFORMATION
We will always make every effort to obtain information from alternative sources within the Fire Service to assist media colleagues but occasionally it may not be possible to provide requested information in time for a deadline.

The Corporate Communications team will co-ordinate all requests for interviews, broadcasts or information involving Fire Authority staff or premises. Approaches direct to station-based staff, other than the routine daily calls, will be referred to the team to be dealt with.

If you are seeking a spokesperson or would like advice as to where to obtain particular information, please contact the Corporate Communications team who will be able to assist you.
