Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) aims to contribute to securing a safe society by reducing the incidence of
death, injury and damage to property from fire and other emergencies.
Commercial Fire Safety
The
Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO)
came into effect in October 2006 and replaced over 70 pieces of fire safety law. It applies to virtually all non-domestic
premises and covers nearly every type of building, structure and open space.
The FSO places a duty on the responsible person to undertake a suitable and sufficient
fire risk assessment
which identifies the general fire precautions which need to be taken to ensure the safety of relevant people. Under the
majority of circumstances the significant findings of the risk assessment must be recorded. Royal Berkshire Fire
and Rescue Service enforces general fire safety legislation on behalf of Royal Berkshire Fire Authority in Berkshire.
To assist responsible persons the Government has produced sector specific
guidance which provides detailed information
on the
fire risk assessment and other issues which must be addressed to comply with the requirements of the legislation.
A
short guide to making your premises safe from fire
is also available which provides simple and practical advice to those responsible for fire safety in smaller premises.
Should you wish to employ the services of a professional risk assessor we would strongly recommend that you select somebody
from the
Institution of Fire Engineers Register of Fire Risk Assessors and Auditors.
Should you require any further guidance please contact your
local fire safety office.
