Firefighting is a demanding job that calls for teamwork, energy, determination, a wide range of practical skills and common sense. Firefighters use equipment ranging from hand tools and hydraulic rescue equipment to satellite technology, so need to be able to switch between computer skills to hands-on effort at a moment’s notice.

Our firefighters attend incidents ranging from road and rail accidents to fuel and chemical spills, aviation and waterway accidents, collapsed buildings, large animal rescues and of course, fires. Take a look at some of the historical incidents we have attended here.

Community engagement

It’s not all action – firefighters spend a great deal of their time on community safety initiatives to try and prevent such incidents happening in the first place. Alongside our specialist Prevention teams, they work with partner organisations, such as local authorities, the police, ambulance service, voluntary and community groups to raise awareness of safety issues.
