On-Call Firefighting

COVID-19 update

Following recent Government advice around the impact of COVID-19 and in order to help ensure we can continue to deliver our critical service during this difficult and complex period Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has paused recruitment activity for Retained (on-call) firefighters. If you are interested in applying for this post when recruitment activity resumes please do contact us at recruitment@rbfrs.co.uk

As part of the role, on-call (retained) firefighters receive an annual wage plus additional payments for attending drill nights, training and any incidents. On average, On-Call firefighters provide between 40 and 120 hours cover per week to help serve their local community.

Currently, there is a shortage of on-call firefighters within Berkshire particularly in our small towns or rural areas. The most important attributes of an on-call firefighter are self-motivation, compassion, commitment and teamwork.

There are a number of on-call recruitment events held throughout the year so be sure to take a look.

Essential requirements for the role:

  • You must live or work within a 6-8 minute radius of your local retained station.
  • Be aged 18 and over.
  • Be a team player.
  • Be able to attend a Monday night drill night once a week.
  • Be passionate about serving your community.
