Apprenticeships in the fire and rescue service

To coincide with National Apprenticeship Week, which takes place between 4-8 March, RBFRS has published two apprenticeship vacancies, one in its Resourcing and Development team and the other in its Business Support Team. Since August 2017, apprentices have been gaining and developing valuable skills and experience as a result of the apprenticeship opportunities offered at Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS).

RBFRS is supporting National Apprenticeship Week, an annual celebration of the impact that apprenticeships have on individuals, employers and the economy.

There are currently four apprentices at RBFRS, working in the Human Resources, Resourcing and Development, Business Support and Facilities teams.

RBFRS has a People Strategy, which is underpinned by the principle of enabling  staff to become the best public servants they can be. As an employer, they  recognise that their workforce, and their commitment to the public, is what allows them to deliver excellent services to the people they serve. All of their apprentices have contributed to increasing diversity, and are an excellent indication of how RBFRS is committed to developing and valuing staff, and the benefits that brings both to individuals and to the Service. 

In recognition of the apprenticeship scheme, two of RBFRS’ staff have recently been shortlisted for an award at Newbury College’s Apprenticeship Awards 2019. Ellece Ott has been nominated for Best Apprentice in a Large Business Apprenticeship Award and Emma Scott, in the role of her manager, has been nominated for Best Workplace Mentor Apprenticeship Award, in recognition of the support she has provided to Ellece during her apprenticeship. The awards will take place on Thursday, 7 March at Newbury College.

When discussing her apprenticeship, Ellece Ott said: “I’ve gained a lot of confidence through my apprenticeship. When I joined the Service I quickly got settled thanks to the support of my colleagues and have been encouraged to contribute and learn from others as much as possible.”
