Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is currently recruiting On-call Firefighters for its five On-call fire stations across the county.

On-call firefighters play an essential and unique role within RBFRS. These firefighters are not based on fire stations, but they are always prepared to respond to any emergency when called.
Anyone from any background or walk of life can apply to be an On-call Firefighter, so long as they are 18 years old or over, and live or work within:
- 8 minutes of Lambourn Fire Station;
- 6 minutes of Mortimer Fire Station;
- 6 minutes of Hungerford Fire Station;
- 6 minutes of Maidenhead Fire Station;
- or 6 minutes of Crowthorne Fire Station.
As part of the role, On-call firefighters receive an annual wage plus additional payments for attending drill nights, training and any incidents. On average, On-call firefighters provide between 40 and 120 hours cover per week to help serve their local community. The most important attributes of an On-call firefighter are self-motivation, compassion, commitment and teamwork.
Matt Riley, On-Call Station Manager and Hub Officer at RBFRS, said: “We’re always looking for people who want to serve and protect their communities, and there’s no better way to do that than to become an On-call Firefighter.
“On-call Firefighters play a key role in enhancing our response to emergency incidents, and we’re inviting people to apply and begin a new and fulfilling career in the fire and rescue service. A Firefighter Selection Test day is being held in early February, so now is the perfect time to apply.
“If you are local to the Lambourn area of Berkshire and are considering joining as an On-call Firefighter, we are hosting a special ‘Have a Go Day’ event at Lambourn Fire Station on Sunday, 25 January where guests can learn more about the role and try some of the physical tests that are required as part of the recruitment process. Visit our website to read more and register your interest.”
RBFRS welcomes applications from people of any background and there is no ‘stereotypical firefighter’. Applications are assessed solely on merit, and successful applicants must be available to attend each stage of the recruitment process.
