Our Discover a Career as a Firefighter programme is to help potential applicants find out more about being a Firefighter in Berkshire and understand whether the career is right for them. 

The sessions provide an ideal opportunity to find out more about the role, the application process and what life at a fire station is like.

If you don’t know much about the fire and rescue service at the moment – don’t worry! These sessions have been designed to give anyone a flavour of the role – whether you’ve thought about it before or not.

All sessions are free to attend.

There are two sessions to attend which are held either online or at our fire stations.  We would encourage you to attend both sessions to give you a thorough overview of the role and what the recruitment process involves.

Whilst there is no typical day in this job, this session will provide you with an overview of the role of a modern Firefighter.

The learning outcomes for this session are:

• Understand the role of a firefighter, what the job entails and the demands of the job.
• Understand the shift patterns, structure and daily routines.
• Understand the training and requirements for the apprenticeship.
• Understand the fitness requirements and physical tests.
• Experience of the practical elements associated with the fitness requirement including the physical tests at recruitment.
• Making an informed decision – is this the career for me?

Firefighting is a popular career option, so this session is designed to give you all you need to know about the recruitment process and how you can give yourself the best possible chance of success.

The learning outcomes for this session are:

• Understand the different stages of the recruitment process.
• Understand the eligibility criteria and essential requirements.
• Recognise the values and behaviours expected.
• Understand the training requirements of the apprenticeship.
• This session will be held online on Microsoft Teams.
