Talk Trauma Initiative

We are introducing Talk Trauma, an initiative designed to support members of the public who have witnessed or have been directly involved in a traumatic incident attended by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Incidents we attend can have a significant psychological impact on those involved or those who witness them. While most people recover naturally over time, it is common for individuals to experience short-term reactions such as sadness, change of mood or behaviour, distress, sleep disruption or feeling overwhelmed following a traumatic event. Providing clear and simple information at the right time can help normalise these experiences and guide people towards appropriate support services if they need it.

As part of the Talk Trauma initiative, we have created small information postcards available to give to members of the public following an incident. The postcard briefly acknowledges that experiencing reactions after trauma is normal and signposts individuals to a dedicated webpage, where they can find further information and links to professional support services if required.

Martyn Ainsworth, Firefighter from Newbury Fire Station, has led this initiative forward, he explains: “Throughout my time in the Service, I’ve seen first-hand the impact that traumatic incidents can have on people. That experience is what motivated me to develop the Talk Trauma initiative.

“This isn’t about providing mental health advice or direct support. Instead, it’s about making it easier for people to access help, by signposting them to trusted national and local services when they need it.

“Mental health is a vital part of our overall wellbeing, and I hope this initiative helps our communities feel more aware, supported, and able to find the right help at the right time.”
