Are you looking for a new and exciting challenge? Become a retained firefighter at Mortimer Fire Station

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is looking for people from the local community of Mortimer and surrounding areas, to join them and become a retained (parttime) firefighter at Mortimer Fire Station.

If you’re looking for a new challenge and an opportunity to actively make a difference in your local community, then please come along to our ‘open house’ event on Saturday 8 October and find out for yourself what this exciting opportunity involves from the firefighters who currently serve their community.

Unlike their wholetime (full-time) colleagues, retained firefighters work on a fire station and respond to emergency fire calls via a pager, and also often have other local employment as well. For this reason, retained firefighters need to be able to reach Mortimer Fire Station within seven minutes of being alerted, so that they can then respond to the emergency call.

The ‘open house’ event is open to any individual who is 18 years old or over and is interested in becoming a retained firefighter at Mortimer Fire Station. During the event you will have the opportunity to speak to many of the firefighters who currently serve the Mortimer community and the rest of the people of Berkshire. You can discover the skills and attributes that we require and value in our staff by taking part in some physical challenges and also take a closer look at the equipment that we use to help make Berkshire safer.

The ‘open house’ event is being held on the following date:

Saturday 8 October from 10am until 2pm at Mortimer Fire Station (West End Road)

You don’t need any specific qualifications or experience to become a retained firefighter, but you must have a good standard of fitness. If you are interested in joining RBFRS then please register your interest by emailing: davisc@rbfrs.co.uk and bushnellg@rbfrs.co.uk

As a retained firefighter you will receive comprehensive, ongoing training throughout your career. You will also be paid a basic retainer, plus additional fees for call outs, training and other duties such as equipment maintenance. If you are not available all the time, you can choose to be on-call for only part of the day or week. For more information about becoming a retained firefighter, including the application process and pay scales, visit: www.rbfrs.co.uk/careers.
