How You Can Help Us

Think before you park

In the event of fire, it can be paramount that firefighters have access to water supplies quickly. Obstruction of fire hydrants could place the lives of yourself, your family and your neighbours at risk.

A person commits an offence if they damage or obstruct a fire hydrant, and they are liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £500 (Fire and Rescue Services Act Section 42).

Parking for a short time on a hydrant can occur occasionally, but if this happens repeatedly with the same vehicle it should be reported to the water services team at RBFRS.

A vehicle obstructing a fire hydrant may not be insured against any damage caused by the Fire and Rescue Service whilst gaining access to the required water supply.

It is also important to ensure that when parking on public roads consideration is given as to whether a fire appliance can navigate between the vehicles in order to gain access to a fire.

Hydrant markers

If the marker plate is covered by overgrown vegetation, residents can help by cutting back any grass, plants or bushes to ensure the marker is clearly visible to approaching fire appliances.

Dry risers / Wet risers

A dry riser is a system of valves and pipe work which enables the fire service to pump water onto upper floors of a multi storey building. A wet riser is a system of valves and pipe work which is kept permanently charged with water, generally utilising pumps and tanks.

Dry riser and wet riser access panels should be kept clear of obstructions at all times.  Any damage to the cabinet or issues with overgrown vegetation should be reported to the buildings property management company.

Relocating hydrant markers

Occasionally fire hydrants may need to be relocated.  For example a concrete marker post may be obstructing a proposed new access to a property or the existing drive may need to be widened.

If you wish to relocate a hydrant marker, please contact RBFRS by emailing hydrants@rbfrs.co.uk.

We will then be able to ensure an alternative marker plate is installed in a suitable location.
